This is the Cape May, NJ Lighthouse. This particular structure was built in 1859 - the third to be built on this site. There are 199 metal steps in the cast iron spiral staircase - that is 199 steps UP and 199 steps DOWN!! The kids did pretty well. Behind them, in the picture below, you can see how high up we were.It was a cold, windy, misty day but that didn't keep us from searching the beach at the lighthouse for Cape May "diamonds" (stones that are white in color and very smooth) and checking out the waterfowl. Reilly was in the backpack on the beach but Chris had to carry her up the stairs in his arms. Thankfully he didn't venture out onto the observation deck.
